    Application Design

The key portion of an application is what you state as hypothesis, as aims and sub-aims. If you design is not hypothesis driven and the hypothesis is not testable, then you must reconsider. If you call NIH staff for help and potential leads, the first thing they would ask is for aims you are considering. In this 1-3 pages portion of the application with hypothesis, aims and sub-aims you MUST convince peers of the what, why, how, and what for?

The example chosen here is for illustration purposes. Dr. Fermin who prepared these excerpts never worked in a dental research field.

Before you waste time designing experiments that could potentially be completed by other, and worse funded by the institute you are applying, check http://crisp.cit.nih.gov/ where all funded applications are required to post names, abstracts and PI information. A search done 10-8-08 yielded 172 funded applications under the key terms "Dental & Care." The first five are shown below..

What has been done

Now you need to narrow the field by selecting several laboratories (Investigators) that best fit your plan. Then try to find more information about those grants because CRISP only gives you the abstract

These are free references and get you started without having to spend a penny. If your unit does not subscribe to the cited journal, your librarian can help to obtain a copy of any article via interlibrary loans. Again, if wikipedia (http://wikipedia.org/) has more substance than your application…?

The above quickly tells you that this investigator is a busy and productive person who if willing to collaborate with you may be to your benefit. Now you check his work by reading published papers and book chapters.
