The office of the Associate Dean for Research and Advanced Studies (ADRAS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health (CVMNAH) at Tuskegee University coordinates graduate studies and research activities. ADRAS responds directly to the Dean of the College Dr. Tsegaye HabteMariam, but works closely with other deans of the college to fulfill goals of the strategic plan to increase quality of research, publications, and grants.
Because of its unique makeup combining human and animal health under one roof, CVMNAH provides a truly diversified and interdisciplinary path to understanding basic and clinical sciences while relating to the one-medicine-one-health concept that guides academic function of the college. The CVMNAH, and hence Tuskegee University, is located in the heart of the Alabama Black Belt County (BBC) region of the US, where a disproportionate number of individuals suffer from cancer, HIV, diabetes and hypertension. The health disparity of the region is the focus of activities and basic research intentions of the CVMNAH as well as other regular activities such as annual Biomedical Research Symposium developed to highlight research efforts and update faculty, students and trainees.
Currently, two main themes embrace the majority of basic research projects at the college: (1) Cancer and (2) HIV. The college faculty researches these themes by applying expertise in molecular, epidemiology, bio-statistical, clinical, pathology, food safety, and infectious diseases. Further information about faculty expertise and laboratory activity is found under (http://compepid.tuskegee.edu/ADRAS/Faculty_list.htm). The majority of the college research development takes place in the Williams-Bowie Research building (WBRB) where other key research support systems are organized to support investigators and student learning experiences.
Three academic and basic science departments form the main research core of the college: Biomedical Sciences headed Dr. Hari Goyal, Clinical Sciences headed by Dr. Jeannine Bellamy, and Pathobiology headed by Dr. Frederick Tippett. In addition, the CVMNAH encompasses other critical units that enrich academic offering with a truly multidisciplinary basis: Occupational Therapy Program, Nursing program, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Services, and International Programs among other. The above activities are supported by: modern computer laboratories, distance learning technology and molecular biology instrumentation.
