Summary of Project Goals/Objectives and Expected Outcomes

Project Goals :

•  Strengthen SPS capacity in India through risk assessment training

•  Create long-term partnerships between Tuskegee University, NASULGC, USDA, ANGRAU   in India and other Indian government agencies and universities.

Project Objectives:

•  To provide risk analysis and SPS workshop to participants from India in order to promote global trade in agricultural products

•  To provide training in epidemiologic risk analysis and modeling with a focus on animal, plant health and food safety risk assessments

•  To provide resources for risk analysis and modeling training using (CD-ROM, and the Internet)

•  To provide additinal short term training to at least six Indian scientists to get firsthand exposure to SPS regulatory agencies and activities in the US

Expected Outcomes :

•  Strengthen human capacity for SPS compliance and risk assessment;

•  Increase opportunities for trade;

•  Improve relationships between India and the US;

•  Increase collaboration between the US and India on SPS issues;

•  Reduce potential risk to the US of foreign pests and diseases, and

•  Refine and share Internet and CDROM based SPS and risk assessment resources for mentoring and on-going support

More specifically, we will:

•  Organize and teach one workshop in Hyderabad, India on SPS compliance and risk assessments;

•  Advise Indian universities on curriculum development for SPS compliance;

•  Provide mentoring opportunities for at least six Indian scientists and SPS regulators with counterparts in the US;

•  Initiate at least ten quantitative and qualitative risk assessments that Indian scientists and administrators decide as high priority needs for agricultural exports from India

•  Complete series of course lectures and exercises available on CDROM

•  Same set of resources available on the WWW at our websites at: http://www.onemedicine.tuskegee.edu and http://compepid.tuskegee.edu

•  Workbook with current references, worked out examples, exercises and other literature

Note: Participants are encouraged to come prepared as follows to:

  • Work as members of a team. A risk assessment is best done when several disciplinary experts come together to work as a team to address risk agent and/or commodity related problems of significant Iocal/national/international standing.
  • Identify projects of interest to India that requires risk assessments to be performed to promote agricultural trade.
  • Identify other members with whom you can partner with to advance projects of mutual interest.
