TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE, NURSING AND ALLIED HEALTH HOSTS CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENT WORKSHOPS

by Anissa L. Riley

As a part of the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health's (CVMNAH) ongoing effort to enhance the curriculum, the Teaching/Learning Center through the Office of the Dean hosted two Curriculum Enhancement workshops this summer.   "Closing the Loop: Preparing for Ongoing Curriculum Enhancement" was the title of a two-day workshop held June 11-12, 2007, and a one-day workshop held August 16, 2007.   The workshops were open for all faculty, residents, interns, graduate students and research assistants who also instruct students.

"The purpose of these continued workshops is to ensure that the curriculum is prepared according to the Tuskegee University guidelines and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) expectations prior to the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 accreditation visit of Tuskegee University as well as to improve classroom instruction throughout the college," said Dr. Tsegaye Habtemariam, Dean of the CVMNAH.

SACS is a private, nonprofit, regional agency that grants accreditation of higher education institutions in the Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia) and Latin America that award associate, baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degrees.

Dr. Hari Goyal, Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the CVMNAH, and Dr. Doris Holeman, Associate Dean for the CVMNAH School of Nursing and Allied Health, presided over the two-day June workshop. Dr. Shandra Terrell Williams, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs/Director of the CVMNAH Teaching/Learning Center (TLC), presided over the one-day workshop in August.

Three consultants presented at the June 11-12 Curriculum Workshop.   They included: Dr. Betsy Ann Hagan, Senior Associate Dean/Director of Clinics at Virginia Commonwealth University; Dr. Linda Bradford, Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs/Dean of Education at Stillman College; and Tuskegee's own Dr. Henry Findlay, Professor/Director of Program Development at Tuskegee University's Office of Continuing Education.

The August 16 Curriculum Workshop was conducted by Dr. Larry H. Kelley, owner and consultant of Larry Kelley Educational Services-Center for Assessment and Planning Support in Auburn, AL.   Dr. Kelley conducts national and international conferences on educational planning, assessment, and institutional research as well as provides consulting services to colleges and universities.   He has also served as chief assessment consultant to Tuskegee University's Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences.

In June, participants attended several sessions presented by the three consultants on "Staying Accreditation Ready," "Team Teaching: Killing the Young Minds," "Clinical Competency Assessment," "Instructional and Assessment Strategies to Enhance Test-Taking," "Lessons Learned: 25 years of clinical competency assessment in dental education," "SACS Requirements and Expectations," "Clinical Competency Assessment," "Preparing Syllabi for Curriculum Assessment," and "Instructional and Assessment Strategies to Enhance Test-Taking."

The day-long August workshop included the following:   the keynote address by Dr. Kelley, "Enhancing the Curriculum through the Effective Use of Assessment Results;" faculty presentation by Dr. Mohammed Khalil, "Teaching Innovation: Effective Strategies in Designing Computer-based instructional programs;" TLC staff presentation including material from Elaine Lett and Jacqueline Mcarthur on computer-based education topics such as "Blackboard: Benefits of Gradebook," "Using the Syllabus Template (Q&A)," and "LXR-Test: Examples of the CVMNAH Usage."

"This summer's Curriculum Enhancement Workshops will prove to be of a major benefit to all persons in the instructional arena here in the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health.   For starters, a huge amount of focus is on the University reaffirming its accreditation status by SACS.   As Dean Habtemariam has previously stated, making sure the curriculum within the College is in line with the University's guidelines as well as SACS expectations is very critical.   Our consultants did an outstanding job in instructing and enlightening all academicians in attendance for these workshops.   There is no doubt we have been given material to help move us forward in the right direction," said TLC Director Dr. Shandra Williams.
