The Poarch Creek Reservation-Perdido Farms is a component or branch of the West Alabama Herd Health Project. In the case of Perdido Farms, trips are made two (2) times a year, for approximately 3-4 working days due to the large size of the herd, which is currently over 800 animals.
During these trips, large animal veterinarians Dr. Kenneth Newkirk and Dr. Rick Bridges supervise and instruct 3-4 students. This component of the project has been in existence for approximately 6 years and numbers usually increase by more than 100 animals, annually.
Currently, over 60,000 animals have been treated by the students during the life of the West Alabama Herd Health Project and over 850 students have participated. This project was originally conceived to address the specific needs of beef cattle herds. During the last 19 years, these veterinary services have been extended, on various occasions, to horses, swine, goats, rabbits, dogs, cats, and two deer.
