IMMUNOLOGY & VIROLOGY
The immunology laboratory functions as a separate but integral component of the microbiology laboratory and is located on the second floor of the Williams-Bowie Hall. The laboratory telephone extension is (334) 727-8797. The laboratory is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closed on Saturday and Sunday. This laboratory is capable of performing the following tests:
(1) The immunology/virology laboratory is well equipped to carry out tests that directly detect viral pathogens (via isolation in cell culture) or their antigens (using fluorescent antibody techniques and flow cytometry). This section also detects the activities of pathogen in small, large and food animals using commercially available ELISA kits. We are a USDA approved laboratory for Equine Infectious Anemia testing in horses using agar gel immunodiffusion test. At present, we carry out routine diagnostic assays to detect the following pathogens:
* Canine: o Canine Parvovirus
(2) Immunological assays, including the following:
(3) Flow Cytometry: As part of our efforts to expand our menu of immunological assays, we have acquired two flow cytometers (two-laser FACSCalibur (BD Biosciences and Cytek Development) and ec800 flow cytometer (Sony Biotechnology). With these instruments we are able, with prior arrangements, to offer phenotyping of hematological tumors, specific pathogen detection, analysis of cell cycle, analysis of ploidy in tumor cells, and assay of phagocytosis and oxidative burst to evaluate innate immunity in all species. Contact Dr. Wole Odemuyiwa at: 334-724-4799.
No samples will be processed without a properly filled request form(s) and the signature of the clinician handling that specific case. Specimens should be submitted to the Microbiology Laboratory 3 to 4 hours after collection on the same day and placed in the refrigerator or shipped in ice via postal services (regional clients). Specimens are picked up from the refrigerator at 9:30 a.m., and again at 2:00 p.m. This is done in order to provide results no later than the same time period the following day for most tests. Virus tests are processed only on Mondays, due to the time constraints of these tests. Results from these test are usually ready the following Friday. For other tests, please call the laboratory for instructions prior to submitting samples. When virus isolation is requested, call the laboratory to request virus transport medium.
